Please note: This is an overview of what each of these providers shown offers based on a selection of key features advertised. It’s not a full list of what the policies offer or exclude. We recommend getting a personalised quote and checking the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and Target Market Determination (TMD) for the policy to understand what is and isn’t covered and what limits, sub-limits, exclusions, terms and conditions apply before deciding if the product is suitable for you. While this is an extensive list of motorcycle insurance providers in Australia, we cannot guarantee that all providers are shown.

What does motorcycle insurance cover?

Depending on your level of coverage, motorcycle insurance can cover the loss or accidental damage to your motorcycle (regardless of who’s at fault) and your liability for accidental damage your motorcycle causes to other people’s property. Motorcycle insurance may also cover damage to your motorcycle caused by theft and weather events, depending on the policy.

Car insurance does not always include cover for motorcycles and vice versa.

Types of motorcycle insurance

There are three levels of motorcycle insurance:

1. Comprehensive motorcycle insurance

Comprehensive motorcycle insurance covers accidental loss or damage to your motorcycle (up to the value shown on your Insurance Certificate), and your liability for damage to people's property or vehicles caused by your motorcycle. It also covers theft, fire and other severe weather events like storms, hail and floods. Comprehensive motorcycle insurance provides the highest level of protection.

2. Third party property only

Third party property only is typically included in comprehensive policies, or available as a standalone cover. It provides benefits for your legal liability arising from damage to someone else’s property caused by the use of your bike and covers damage to your motorcycle caused by an insured driver. It does not cover accidental damage to your motorcycle or damage caused by hail, storms or floods.

3. Third party property, fire & theft

This optional cover (also typically included in comprehensive policies) provides all the benefits of third party property only, plus coverage for fire and theft damage to your motorcycle. It does not cover accidental damage to your motorcycle or damage caused by hail, storms or floods.

4. Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance

Every registered motorcycle in Australia is covered by Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance. It covers your liability and that of anyone who drives your motorbike if someone is injured or killed in an accident involving your motorcycle. It’s typically paid for each time you renew your registration.

Compare motorcycle insurance benefits for each level of cover

This table shows what’s generally included under each level of cover, but inclusions will vary depending on your individual policy and insurer. Check your insurer’s PDS for the full list of inclusions, limits, sub-limits and conditions of cover.

What’s not covered by motorcycle insurance?

General exclusions that apply to motorcycle insurance:

  • Any loss or damage caused by a rider not listed on your policy
  • Loss or damage caused by a driver without a valid licence
  • Loss or damage caused by a driver under the influence of alcohol or any other illegal substance
  • Tyre damage caused by punctures, cuts or bursts
  • Mechanical, electrical breakdown or failure
  • Damage caused by using the incorrect type or mix of fuel
  • Damage caused by the discharge of oil, coolant, pollutant or contaminant from the motorcycle other than as a result of a collision
  • General wear and tear, corrosion, rust or depreciation
  • Unauthorised repairs or modifications.

Refer to the insurer’s Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) for the full list of inclusions, exclusions and conditions of cover.

How much does motorcycle insurance cost?

The cost of motorcycle insurance varies between insurance providers because it will depend on factors unique to you (e.g. your driver profile) and your vehicle, including.

Your level of cover

Comprehensive policies offer coverage for a wider range of events and, therefore, will cost more than basic liability coverage. You will generally pay an additional premium if you add optional extras to your cover, such as windshield excess reduction.

Replacement for agreed or market value

Opting to cover your motorcycle for an agreed value (decided by you and the insurer) often results in a higher premium. Choosing to insure your vehicle for its market value (its selling price at the time of the incident) generally reduces your premium.

Your policy excess

Increasing your excess can lower your premium and vice versa. Most insurers allow you to adjust your excess to increase or decrease your premium. Most insurers have 2-3 excess tiers to choose from.

Your age

Young drivers under 25 generally pay a higher insurance premium as they’re statistically more likely to have an accident than experienced drivers.

Your driving history

You may pay a higher premium if you’ve made any at-fault claims in the last 3-5 years, and a lower premium if you haven’t. Some policies include a no-claim bonus with a discount on your insurance.

Your motorcycle’s age, make and model

Your insurer will take into account your motorcycle's make and model, engine size, kilometres travelled and overall condition. For example, a new Harley-Davidson would cost more to insure than an older model. Likewise, a motorbike with a larger engine will be more expensive to insure than one with a smaller, less powerful engine.

Where your motorcycle is usually parked

You’ll generally pay a lower premium if your car is parked in a garage or under a carport within the boundary of your property instead of on the street.

Security devices fitted to your motorcycle

Some insurers require you to have at least one security device like an alarm, tracking device or kill switch. The more secure your motorbike is against theft, the less you’ll pay for insurance.

If you’ve made modifications to your motorcycle

Additional accessories or modifications (e.g. custom paint work) can impact the value of your motorcycle and therefore your insurance premiums.

If you’ve completed an accredited riding course

This is a training course for motorcycle handling skills in addition to your motorcycle licence. For example, Swann Insurance offers riders a 5% discount on comprehensive cover when they complete an advanced motorcycle training course.

Your choice of insurer

The price of motorcycle insurance will vary between providers as they assess risk differently. It’s important to compare cover options from various insurers before deciding on a policy.

Motorcycle insurance cost comparison among popular insurers in Australia

Comprehensive motorcycle insurance can range between $10-$70 a month, based on analysis of a selection of quotes obtained by Money.com.au. This is an example showing the cost difference from selected providers and is not an indication of how much you would pay. Cost comparison is based on quotes for a 30-year old male driver in QLD with a 2018 Suzuki GSX-R125XA (with an agreed value of $3,300), with no previous claims and no driver under 25 on the policy.

How to save money on motorcycle insurance

1

Increase your excess

Most insurers allow you to increase your excess to reduce your premium. A higher excess means you'll pay more if you make a claim but less in monthly/annual premiums. You may be able to choose different excess tiers, depending on your policy.

2

Pay your premium annually instead of monthly

Some insurers offer discounts when you pay your premium annually instead of monthly. This may not be practical for everyone, but having the option is always a bonus. Other insurers allow you to pay your premium monthly at no extra cost. When in doubt, always ask.

3

Bundle your insurance policies

You may be able to save money by combining your motorcycle insurance with your car insurance and any other existing policies under the same insurer. Some insurers also offer discounts when you cover more than one motorbike under a policy.

4

Secure your motorcycle

Most insurers offer discounts if you fit your motorbike with anti-theft devices like alarms, immobilisers, disc locks, etc. Insurers have their own list of approved devices they look for when calculating your premiums. Parking your motorcycle in a locked or secure location can also reduce your premium.

5

Get additional riding qualifications

Having a relevant motorcycle licence is a prerequisite for insurance, but undertaking additional accredited rider training can lower your premium. You will have to pay for this training yourself, but the long term savings could offset the upfront costs.

6

Compare insurance providers

Compare cover inclusions, prices and discounts (if any) from different insurers. The aim is to find a policy that provides adequate coverage for your needs and riding habits, and that fits within your budget.

What’s the cheapest motorcycle insurance?

A basic type of cover like third party property is likely to be the cheapest option, as it only covers the cost of damages caused by your motorcycle to others’ property (liability cover). It won’t cover accidental loss or damage to your motorcycle or damage from weather-related events.

A comprehensive insurance policy offers a higher level of cover but you’ll generally pay a higher premium. That said, there may be ways to reduce the cost – by paying your premium annually instead of monthly, for example.

Compare prices for motorcycle insurance policies from specialist insurers and general insurers to see which is cheaper.

Motorcycle insurance FAQs

Here are some discounts available from motorcycle insurance providers in Australia:

  • Rider training discount: Some insurers offer a discount on comprehensive policies to motorcyclists who’ve completed an advanced accredited rider training course, as they're perceived as safer riders and, therefore, less likely to claim on their policy. Advanced motorcycle training is designed to improve motorcycle handling skills, such as riding safely at higher speeds or in wet weather.

  • Security device discount: You may get a discount if your motorcycle is fitted with a security device like an alarm, tracking device or electronic immobiliser. For example, Swann Insurance offers a 5% policy discount on comprehensive covers if your motorbike is fitted with a tracking device and/or immobiliser. In some cases, it may be a condition of cover.

  • Multi-vehicle discount: Some insurance providers offer a discount when you have more than one motorbike under a single policy, such as your weekend bike and daily drive.

  • Multi-policy discount: Some insurance providers offer a discount when you combine multiple eligible insurance policies. For example, Suncorp Insurance offers a 15% multi-policy discount when you buy three or more eligible personal insurance policies.

  • No claim discount: This discount is available on comprehensive policies for each year you don’t make an at-fault claim on your policy (usually up to a maximum of five years). It’s designed to reward your good claims history.

  • Casual rider discount: If your motorcycle is not your primary means of transportation and you don't use it regularly, you may be eligible for discounted rates on your insurance.

Yes, you may have to pay an excess (an out-of-pocket sum) if you make an at-fault claim. Depending on the circumstances of the incident, you may have to pay more than one excess. For example, if someone under 25 listed on your policy was responsible for the claim, you’d have to pay your standard policy excess, plus an age excess due to the rider’s age, according to Budget Direct.

Yes, you may get a new for old replacement under a comprehensive cover for a new or demonstrator model purchased from a licensed dealer if it’s written off within two or three years of original registration (depending on your policy). Other conditions may apply, such as your vehicle must weigh less than 2.5 tonnes and a replacement vehicle must be available in Australia.

Yes, many insurers have a 'choice of repairer' benefit in their comprehensive policies. This allows you to nominate your preferred repairer if your motorcycle is damaged in an insured event like an accident. Alternatively, other insurers may require you to choose a repairer from their network of partners.

Yes, motorcycle insurance generally covers factory-fitted and legal aftermarket accessories and modifications specified in the PDS. Be sure to tell your insurer about any modifications to your motorcycle when you buy a policy, or if you make any changes to your motorcycle after you’ve purchased a policy.

Motorcycle insurance generally only covers on-road, registered motorcycles. For example, Budget Direct and AAMI provide cover for accidental loss or damage for motorcycles, such as:

  • Road bikes
  • Scooters
  • Mopeds
  • Cruisers
  • Sports bikes
  • Dual-sport motorcycles.

Unregistered motorbikes (e.g dirt bikes), racing bikes and motorcycles used for business, hire or paid riding tuition are generally not covered under a standard motorcycle insurance.

No, you’ll generally need a specialised cover for dirt bikes and other off-road bikes due to the different risks associated. You may need to contact a specialist insurer for off-road riding, motocross tracks, trials or enduro races.

Yes, you can generally get insurance for classic and vintage motorcycles through select insurers and specialist providers, such as Swann Insurance which provides cover for motorbikes manufactured from 1977 onwards.
